Sam Lutaalo-Kiingi is a deaf Ugandan academic. He is currently on the Editorial Board of The World’s Sign Languages, a board member of the Deaf Empowerment Foundation and on the Sign Language Expert Board for the World Federation of the Deaf in Finland.

Sam’s thesis for his PhD in Linguistics was focused on the reference grammar of Ugandan Sign Language. Sam is a role model whose life shows that being deaf need not limit the potential of a deaf Ugandan child, if only he or she can be given the right support.

Trustees

Emma Heseltine – Founder
After working as a support worker for a deaf nursery school pupil and studying Montessori Pedagogy, Emma first went to Jinja in 2007. She volunteered alongside the Jinja District Deaf Association in their efforts to improve access to education for the District's deaf children. She set up JD to further support this work. Emma is interested in Sign Language - Cued Spoken Language bilingualism and self-directed education and has ambitions to work in this field in the future. Her husband, Dom, is also a trustee and they continue to make frequent trips to Jinja as a family.

Ian Newth – Chair
Ian joined as Chairman in 2021. He has had a long career in the oil and gas industry and has spent much of the past 20 years working in projects in Sub Saharan Africa.

Derek Harwood– Secretary
Derek joined as a Trustee in 2018 and was appointed secretary in 2019.  He is retired from a long career in project management of oil and gas projects and previously worked for several years in Nigeria.

Anil Bhatt – Treasurer
Anil was appointed Treasurer in 2019. He is highly experienced with 15+ years of professional financial management.

David Johnstone

He makes frequent visits to Uganda in support of education projects for deaf and orphan children which he helped to establish in northern Uganda. He has extensive experience of health and social care management in UK and has previously volunteered with VSO in New Guinea and South Sudan.

Dominic Turinde
Dom comes from Bushenyi in western Uganda. He worked in Uganda for several years doing field monitoring and research with local and international NGOs. He now lives in London with his wife Emma (Jinja DEAF's founder) and their children, but makes frequent trips to Uganda. His local knowledge is a huge asset in facilitating communication and problem-solving between the UK and our Ugandan partners, schools and banks.

Yasmin Moore

Jessica Rosser
Jess joined in 2020. She currently works as a primary teacher at a specialist Deaf school for children with additional needs.
