JInjaJinja is the second largest city in Uganda, East Africa. It is on the shores of Lake Victoria, near the source of the River Nile.
This video from pupils at Walukuba West Primary School gives an introduction to their school and neighbourhood. |
Jinja was named after the word for rock in the local languages: “ejjinja” in Luganda and “edinda” in Lusoga. It was known as the “place of rocks” due to the large flat rocks from which small boats could be launched to cross the river.
About forty languages are spoken in Uganda. Children learn English, which is the written language of the country, when they go to school. |
We have worked with Walukuba West Primary School, in the industrial area of Jinja Town, since 2008 and with Kyomya Primary School, in rural Budondo sub-country, since 2014. Both are government schools.
We currently sponsor a sign language instructor and translator each school. Victoria and Faridah work at Walukubah West and Juliette and Lydia work at Kyomya.
Most day pupils walk to school, sometimes walking hours in a day. A lot of pupils, especially at secondary level, board at school because boarding costs are cheaper than transport costs.
